The exhibition “ THE DICTIONARY WITTY 'LODZIANISMS' (PHRASES TYPICAL OF THE CITY OF ŁÓDŹ). INTERPRETING BY POLISH ILUSTRATORS” is in a way "an attempt to test" the imagination of Polish illustrators. The exhibition will feature 23 large-format illustrations, and the axis around which they were created are the so-called Lodzianisms, or words functioning stricte in the language used in Łódź, characteristic of our region. The exhibition is part of the Łódź Design Festival 2019.
The participants of the exhibition will be 23 recognised Polish illustrators, appreciated both in the country and abroad. The invitation to the project has been accepted by: Karol Banach, Michał Bednarski, Blanka Biernat, Katarzyna Bogucka, Bartek Bojarczuk, Joanna Czaplewska, Magda Grabowska-Wacławek (GraBOVSKA), Monika Hanulak, Izabela Kaczmarek-Szurek, Kazia Kalitan-Młodkowska, Jan Kallwejt, Bartek „Arobal” Kociemba , Bartosz Kosowski, Agata Królak, Michał Loba, Patryk Mogilnicki, Alek Morawski, Anna Niemierko, Patrycja Podkościelny, Anna Rudak, Dawid Ryski, Ola Woldańska-Płocińska, Martyna Wójcik-Śmierska.

The objective of each of the artists was to illustrate a slogan / word from the language used in Łódź in the form of a poster, using their own individual atistic language. The works are therefore an original interpretation of selected words or expressions. The authors are characterized by stylistic diversity, precision of expression, ingenuity, conciseness, conscious use of composition and colour. Drawing on the best traditions of the Polish school of illustration, showing its strength and complexity, they boldly interpret the classic, setting new trends in the world illustration. The result of their creative activities are unique graphic designs, varied stylistically, which were created for the sake of the exhibition and will be presented there.
The works take the form of large-format posters (100x120 cm) and bear the key word used by the author along with an explanation. The illustrated terms include: skokobryki, dęciak, laćki, migawka, bigiel, glikować, badylarz, bijak, bajzel, boba, angielka, drapaki, kulawka, tytka, expres, foliówka, granda, krańcówka, kanar, kulosy, trambambula or uśmotruchać. The educational potential of the project is worth mentioning. The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich program of workshops addressed to both children and adults. The exhibition will also be enhanced by an educational space dedicated to the youngest audience. A creative notebook with tasks that will enable children to learn about the Lodz language will be an integral part of the exhibition.
Due to the fact that each of the creators, defining a given Lodzianism in a graphic way, constructing a narrative with the concept interpretation, treats the recipient as a partner, a sensitive reader of the visual language, an exceptional Łódź dictionary was written by means of images.
The exhibition at the City Art Gallery in Łódź is a great opportunity to get familiar with it. Its purpose is also to make viewers aware of the fact that a characteristic local language functions in each region. It gives the viewers the opportunity to find out about the words and phrases related to the history and culture of Łódź as a centre of four cultures. Thus, it will also be a form of the city promotion. The presentation is also a proof that the language is alive and up-to-date, which is confirmed by the fact that many regionalisms still function in the speech of the inhabitants of Łódź.
