The year 2022 marks the 110th anniversary of birth and the 25th anniversary of death of one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century, Roman Modzelewski (28.02.1912-24.12.1997). On this occasion, the Museum of the City of Łódź has initiated the Year of Roman Modzelewski 2022, and as part of it has prepared the exhibition „RM. Roman Modzelewski. Dream about Łódź.” This title that sounds ambiguously in Polish (łódź- boat and Łódź- the name of the city) refers both to the city Łódź (where Roman Modzelewski lived and worked since 1945) and to the innovative designs he created for yachts and furniture. The exhibition will present the artist’s biography and nearly 100 unique objects: sculptures, paintings, reliefs, documents, photographs, examples of applied art, and compositions in the public space of the city and the region. It will be significantly complemented by boat and furniture designs, including the original RM56, RM57 and the iconic RM58 armchairs. The idea of the exhibition is to recall the role of Roman Modzelewski in continuing the visionary ideas of Władysław Strzemiński and his efforts to preserve his unique, on a European scale, universal programme of educating artists and designers - his influence on the curriculum content of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź and to underline his merits in modern industrial design.

Roman Modzelewski was a painter, a designer, a sculptor, an educator, a sailor, and a music lover whose entire creative life and professional career were centred in Łódź. He was a co-founder of the State School of Fine Arts in this city (currently the Academy of Fine Arts), where he served as the first rector and later a dean, lecturing at the university for nearly 40 years. He believed so strongly in his educational mission that even when the famous architect Le Corbusier proposed that he should emigrate from communist Poland to France, he refused, not wanting to abandon his students. He remained in Łódź until the end of his life, thus giving up his dream of international fame.
