"The Dictionary of Lodz/Human Culture" is the third attempt to illustrate words and expressions functioning in the language of Lodz in the form of graphic designs. The exhibition is a continuation of "The Dictionary of Witty ‘Lodzianisms’ Interpretations by Polish illustrators" − a project that was created in 2019 and "The Dictionary of contemporary Lodz slang expressions. Interpretations by Polish illustrators" – from 2020, which were the result of cooperation between the City Art Gallery in Lodz and the Lodz Design Festival.
The aim of the continuation of the project is to enrich the dictionary consisting of illustrations with new expression. As before, the exhibition is organised by Lodz Design Festival and the City Art Gallery in Lodz. The new idea of this edition will be the interpretation of architecture and places symbols functioning in the common awareness of the Lodz residents, creating the identity of the city, with which events and people are associated, because they are the ones who give them meaning and bring them to life. That is why the exhibition will be enriched with a series of fourteen portraits – drawings made by Magda Danaj, depicting well-known and treasured Lodz residents. Presumably it is not clear to everyone what places are referred to when they hear: Space Station, Opera, Chief, Plac Before Piotrkowska, Grohman's barrels, Stone Street, art school as “Plastyk”, philharmonic as “Koncertówka”, Double Seven, Storks.
Just like before, the task of the graphic artists was to translate the chosen slogan from the Lodz dictionary into a language combining a verbal message with a visual interpretation.
The authors of the works are well known and recognized contemporary Polish artists, valuing freedom of artistic expression. Illustrators have created works that are exquisite in terms of technique and visually attractive, sophisticated, stylistically individualized, arousing emotions and curiosity. - says Adriana Usarek, the exhibition curator.
